Wholesome fresh local produce
Eating and drinking in the charming local village of Makry Gialos is an authentic and enjoyable experience. There’s no fast food or rapid turnaround of tables here. It’s a far cry from noisy and hectic tourist strips with their heaving bars and nightclubs. The pace of life here is laid back and relaxing and the mood is calm and casual. You will receive a warm welcome from your Greek hosts wherever you choose to eat.
Stroll down to the harbour where you can take a seat on a veranda or on the seafront promenade with the gentle lapping of the sea just beside you. The area is full of character and there are some splendid fish restaurants with the latest catch on show. The ingredients here are all fresh and locally sourced so you get a taste of the real Crete.
Further along the bay is a variety of restaurants, serving a selection of food, from simple grills to Italian pastas and pizza. The more typical traditional tavernas offer fantastic value for money on freshly baked Cretan specialities accompanied by locally produced oil, olives, and crusty bread, fabulous enjoyed with a cool carafe of the excellent local wine.
