The Gorge of the Dead
Time: 2-3 hours round trip
Difficulty: Fairly easy with initial short, steep descent.
The impressive Gorge of the Dead at Zakros gets its name from the Minoans who used to bury their dead in the caves which are embedded into the steep gorge cliffs. This fairly easy scenic walk, steeped in ancient history, is easily accessible and well signposted. The walk, which takes about two hours, starts from Ano Zakros, through the Gorge of the Dead to Kato Zakros village and its beautiful beach, where you can take a dip in the clear waters.
Initially there is a steep descent which is easily manageable during the summer months. However, you would be ill advised attempting this in winter when the river is full! Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Minoan Palace of Zakros at the end of your hike and be sure to make this a circular trip by taking the Zakros Old Road back into town which affords breathtaking views over the gorge.
